Know Your Camera Form Factor First

The hardware you need depends entirely on the camera’s shape, because each type mounts differently.

Turret (Eyeball) Cameras

The turret sits in a fixed base, and you aim the “eyeball” within it. These are our go-to for most residential installs — they resist IR glare better than domes and mount cleanly to a flat surface or under a soffit. They typically come with a three-screw base.

Bullet Cameras

Bullet cameras mount on an arm that lets you aim them with more reach, which makes them ideal for wall mounting where you need to angle down a driveway or along a wall. The trade-off is a larger profile and a visible mounting arm.

Dome Cameras

The Junction Box: The Mount Behind the Mount

Most quality outdoor cameras either include or accept a junction box (sometimes called a mounting base or back box). This is the piece that does the real work, and skipping it is the most common shortcut that comes back to bite people.

Why You Want One

A junction box gives you a sealed cavity to tuck the cable pigtail and connector out of the weather, a solid mounting surface, and a clean look with no exposed wiring. Trying to cram an RJ45 connector and a waterproofing cap into the tiny space behind a bare camera base is a recipe for a failed connection the first time it rains. Matching the Box to the Camera

Brand-matched junction boxes screw directly to the camera base with no adapter needed. If you’re using a universal box, check that the screw pattern lines up or that the box has a cable pass-through positioned correctly for your camera.

Fasteners and Anchors: Match the Surface

This is where most mounts fail, and it’s the part your hardware-store trip lives or dies on. The screw that holds a camera into solid wood is the wrong screw for vinyl siding, brick, or stucco.

Wood (Soffit, Fascia, Wood Siding)

The easiest surface. Use exterior-rated wood screws long enough to bite at least an inch into solid wood. If you’re mounting into a soffit, make sure you’re hitting a structural member or backing, not just thin plywood that will pull out.

Vinyl or Aluminum Siding

Never anchor directly into hollow siding — it won’t hold and it cracks. Use a siding-mount block or drive your screws through the siding into the wood sheathing or a stud behind it. A mounting block also gives you a flat, weather-sealed surface on top of contoured siding.

Expansion matters: Vinyl — and any cladding that expands, contracts, or moves with temperature — should never carry the mount under tension. Fasten to a solid substrate behind the siding (a stud or the sheathing) or use an approved mounting block, and avoid compressing or distorting the siding as you tighten. This keeps the mount from working loose as the siding shifts through the seasons and preserves the weather seal at the cable penetration.

Brick and Masonry

Drill into the brick face (not the mortar joint, which is weaker) with a masonry bit, then use plastic or sleeve anchors rated for masonry, or Tapcon concrete screws. Tapcons are the preferred choice here — they hold hard and don’t rely on a plastic sleeve that can spin.

Stucco and EIFS

Drill carefully with a masonry bit and use plastic anchors or Tapcons into the solid substrate behind. Seal every penetration — stucco penetrations are a notorious water-intrusion point.

Drywall (Indoor)

For indoor cameras, hit a stud if you can. If you can’t, use proper drywall anchors rated for the camera’s weight — never just thread a screw into bare drywall. Even a light camera will work the screw loose over time.

Step-by-Step: Mounting an Outdoor Camera

1. Position and Level

Hold the camera (or its template) at the planned location and confirm the view before you drill. A few inches of position change can be the difference between covering the whole driveway and staring at a bush. Level the base.

2. Mark and Drill

Mark your mounting holes and your cable pass-through hole. Drill the mounting holes for your anchors, and drill the cable hole angled slightly downward to the outside if it passes through the wall.

3. Run and Seal the Cable

Feed the cable through, leave a service loop, and seal the cable penetration. Tuck connections into the junction box.

4. Anchor the Mount

Set your anchors, attach the base or junction box, and snug the screws — firm, not stripped. On siding or stucco, add a bead of silicone behind the mount before tightening to seal it against the wall.

5. Aim and Lock

Loosen the camera’s adjustment points, aim it using a live view on your phone or monitor, then lock every adjustment screw down tight. A camera that’s only “mostly” tightened will droop over a few months until it’s filming the ground.

Common Mounting Mistakes

  • No anchor in hollow material. Screws driven into bare drywall, vinyl, or thin soffit will pull out. Always back into something solid or use a rated anchor.
