Guard Source HQ exists for one reason: to give homeowners straight, hands-on answers about security cameras and the networks that run them — without the fluff, the fearmongering, or the sales pitch.
Who’s Behind This
I’m Brad, the founder of Guard Source HQ. I’ve spent 30 years in the construction and mechanical trades — three decades of hands-on work installing equipment, running the systems behind it, and weatherproofing it against whatever the seasons throw at it. More than that, I’ve gone back to those same jobs years later and seen what actually held up and what didn’t — the kind of long-term, real-world knowledge you can’t get from a spec sheet or a product listing.
I’m not a “security expert” with a marketing budget. I’m a tradesman who got tired of watching homeowners get bad advice — oversized systems they didn’t need, undersized power supplies that failed at night, conduit that turned brittle in the sun, cameras mounted so high they only ever captured the tops of people’s heads.
The difference is the hands. Most security camera advice online is written by people who have never pulled a cable through an attic in July or gone back to a job after five winters to see what failed. I have. That field experience — what actually holds up versus what looks good on a spec sheet — is what you’ll find here.

What We Cover
Guard Source HQ focuses on the things homeowners actually struggle with:
- Troubleshooting — why a camera won’t show on the NVR, why footage stops at night, why remote viewing fails, and how to fix it.
- Installation — running cable, sealing exterior penetrations, mounting at the right height, protecting runs with metal conduit.
- Buying guides — what to actually look for in an NVR, a PoE switch, or a hard drive, with no-nonsense comparisons.
- Free tools — calculators for storage, PoE budget, voltage drop, coverage, and more, so you can size your system before you spend a dollar.
- Digital privacy — because a camera system is only as secure as the network and accounts behind it.
How We Do It
Honest, not alarmist
We won’t scare you into buying things you don’t need. Security should make your home work better, not fill you with anxiety. Every recommendation here is the one I’d give a friend or a neighbor.
Field-tested, not theoretical
When I tell you to run metal conduit instead of PVC on an exterior wall, it’s because I’ve gone back to PVC runs after five to eight years and seen them weathered brittle and cracked. The advice comes from what actually happens over time, not from a product listing.
Independent
Guard Source HQ is owned and operated independently. We only point you toward gear we’d genuinely use or install ourselves.
