- Confirm power at the camera. Look for the IR LEDs glowing faintly in the dark or a status light. If a PoE camera is truly dead, its port light on the switch or NVR is off too — that’s a power/cable fault, not a video one, so you’d switch to the “doesn’t show at all” path.
- Check the PoE and link lights. On the NVR or switch, the camera’s port should show a link light. No link light points to the cable or a connector; a solid link but no image means the connection is fine and something downstream is wrong.
- Verify the NVR channel and IP. Make sure the channel isn’t disabled and the camera’s IP is on the same subnet as the NVR. A camera bumped to a different IP range shows “no signal” even though it’s powered and connected.
- Test the cable. Swap in a known-good patch cable at the camera and at the NVR, or move the camera to a port you know works. A single bad crimp or a run nicked by a staple is one of the most common causes.
- Reset the camera, then isolate it. If power, link, IP, and cable all check out, factory-reset the camera and re-add it. Still nothing? Bench-test it: plug the camera straight into a known-good port or injector right beside the NVR. If it works there, the fault is in the run or the network; if it doesn’t, the camera itself is the problem.
Notice the pattern: each step rules out one layer — power, then cable, then NVR settings, then the camera — so by the end you know which part failed instead of shotgunning parts at it. That final bench test is the line between troubleshooting and guessing: once a camera fails plugged straight into a known-good port, it’s the camera, and it’s time to replace it rather than keep resetting.

- Changing settings before checking power and cable. Most “dead” cameras are a power or cable fault; menu changes just add variables. Rule out the physical layer first.
- Testing one unknown against another. Swapping a suspect cable for another suspect cable proves nothing. Keep one known-good cable, injector, and port to test against.
- Ignoring the PoE budget. If several cameras dropped at once, or the newest one never appeared, the switch or NVR may be over its power budget rather than faulty.
- Assuming “offline” means broken. A camera that drops and returns is usually a network or connection issue — a loose RJ45, a failing switch port, or WiFi interference — not a dead camera.
- Resetting in a loop. If a camera fails a direct bench test, more factory resets won’t help. That’s the point to replace it or use the warranty.
